Staff Spotlight: Megan, Our Royalties Client Manager

The Music Royalty Co.'s Royalties Client Manager, Megan.

Say hello to our amazing Royalties Client Manager, Megan! Megan has been a vital member of the team for over three years, bringing expertise (and two budgies) to MRC. Dive into our latest Staff Spotlight and discover the incredible journey Megan has had with us!

What is a typical day like for you in your role?

A standard (work) day in the life of Meg involves responding to emails, assisting clients with any queries that they might have, and making sure that we’re as prepared as possible for any approaching deadlines. This could mean setting up new contracts or catalogues in Curve, checking draft royalty statements, making sure that we’ve got all the data that we need… the list goes on! Of course, all of this is done whilst consuming what is probably an unhealthy amount of tea and/or coffee.

What do you love most about your role?

There are a lot of things that I really love about being a Client Manager at MRC. I love that I get to spend a large amount of time playing with spreadsheets; Microsoft Excel is my happy place (sad, I know), and I love problem-solving/helping to resolve client queries. I think the thing that I love the most, though, is that I get to work in an industry that I’m passionate about. Ever since I was first handed a recorder at the age of 5, music has been a huge part of my life, so for it to now be at the heart of my work too feels incredibly rewarding.

What are your passions and hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work, I spend most of my time knitting, crocheting, spinning wool, or playing percussion with a brass band. I’m also a huge fan of birds, butterflies & moths (but especially birds) so I love going out to my local nature reserves and seeing how many different species I can spot.

What achievements or milestones are you particularly proud of in your career or at MRC?

For me, getting this job was a milestone in and of itself. I knew when I chose to study commercial music that this was a competitive industry, so I was (and still am) really happy to be able to put my degree, and all the knowledge I gained over those three years, to good use.

Do you have any goals you’d love to achieve in the next 12 months?

Most of all, I’m just looking forward to further expanding my music royalties knowledge & expertise, and seeing where that takes me (but on a non-work related note, I’d really love to complete the French course on Duolingo).

What do you enjoy most about working at The Music Royalty Co.?

I really love the people at MRC. I can honestly say I don’t have a single colleague that I don’t enjoy talking to, and I think that’s pretty special. They’re just a lovely, lovely group of people.

Share a fun or interesting fact about yourself that others may not know.

This probably won’t be a surprise for anyone who has ever been on a Zoom/Teams call with me, but I share my office space with two budgies, Buddy & Stormy! Stormy in particular likes to be involved in meetings and will often sit in front of the faces on the screen and do a little dance.

Last question: Who do you wish you could see live?

There are SO many – if I had to choose a band I hadn’t seen before, it’d be Death Cab for Cutie for sure. That said, I would pay a stupid amount of money to see Rick Astley & Blossoms doing Smiths covers again. Preferably these would be matinees because 9 pm is bedtime (why are concerts always at night?)
